Where to shop for family photo outfits
Styling your family for a photo session can feel overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be. Whether you're dreaming of a soft, earthy palette, something a little more bold and fashion-forward, or timeless neutrals with beautiful texture, you have so many options. And good news: they don’t all involve shopping from scratch.
Below are some of my favorite go-to sources for outfits that photograph beautifully and feel like you. These are places that offer comfort with creative style, plus you can find pieces that will not only elevate your session but make everyone feel amazing.
Marine Layer
Best for: laid-back, coastal California vibes.
If you love soft textures, relaxed fits, and that “effortlessly cool” look, Marine Layer is a gem (most of my wardrobe is made . Their designs are full of neutral tones, subtle patterns, and lived-in s that layer perfectly. This is a great place to find things for mom, dad, and teens. Go dressy with a flowy skirt or casual with a bikini top paired with shorts and an open button-down shirt. Think cozy henleys, cotton dresses, and cord jackets that all say “we live at the beach, even if we don’t.”
Free People
Best for: boho queens, earthy mamas, and anyone who wants to feel like a goddess.
Flowy silhouettes, vintage-inspired prints, dramatic sleeves, and romantic layers—Free People brings a bold, feminine edge to photo styling. Whether you're dressing yourself or finding coordinating pieces for teen daughters, their pieces create beautiful movement and feel like wearable art. (My fav for sure!)
Sustainable Secondhand: Poshmark + thredUP
Best for: budget-friendly finds, hard-to-track-down gems, and keeping things planet-friendly.
Before buying new, I always recommend checking secondhand sites. Poshmark is a treasure hunt of gently used (and sometimes brand-new) pieces—including brands like Free People, Joyfolie, J. Crew, Boden and more. You can often find past-season favorites that are perfect for photos but no longer sold in stores.
thredUP is another great source for curated secondhand style, especially if you love searching by color or style. They make it easy to shop for a whole family’s worth of outfits, and it’s a beautiful way to save money and reduce waste.
Rental Options for Something Truly Special
Not every piece needs to live in your closet forever. Rentals are a beautiful, sustainable way to wear something extraordinary, especially when you want a gown that feels extra without the full commitment.
Rent the Runway
Best for: fashion-forward moms looking for a standout moment.
From classic neutrals to bold colors and designer styles, Rent the Runway offers endless outfit possibilities. It's a great option if you’re planning a maternity session or just want to wear something that makes you feel powerful and radiant for this one special day. (Pro tip: look for flowy or form-fitting maxi dresses with texture—those always photograph beautifully.)
Reclamation Design Company
Best for: jaw-dropping lace gowns with a touch of magic.
These gowns are heirlooms in the making. Handmade from reclaimed vintage lace and other unique materials, each Reclamation dress feels one-of-a-kind. They're perfect for maternity, motherhood, or any session where you want to lean into soft, sacred, goddess energy. You can rent directly from Reclamation’s site, or look for them through photography styling services as well. This is the best option if you want “the dress” but know you’ll never wear it again.
Styling Doesn’t Have to Be Stressful
Remember—your family doesn’t need to match. You just want to coordinate. Think complementary colors, a mix of textures, and silhouettes that feel like you. And if you ever feel stuck, I’m always here to help. My pre-session guides include personalized styling suggestions (and links!), and I can help you choose from your options to make sure everything comes together beautifully.
Most of all? Let yourself be seen. These photos are about your connection, your story, your now. And the clothes? They’re just a lovely part of the art.
Hello, I’m Alison…
Hey, I’m Alison—San Diego-based analog film photographer, storyteller, and your go-to girl for capturing real, raw, powerful moments. I believe in making art out of the everyday, whether that’s a beachside family session, a goddess-inspired shoot, or a casual farmers market morning that turns into a photo op moment. My work has been featured in publications, I host photography events, and I even teach photographers how to bring film into their client sessions. When I’m not behind the camera, I’m wrangling my kids, geeking out over film photography, or shopping for (yet another) dress.
