10 Must ask questions before you book your San Diego Family Photos | Alison Hatch Photo

Here are 10 MUST ASK QUESTIONS BEFORE YOU BOOK YOUR SAN DIEGO FAMILY PHOTOS with answers by me, Alison Hatch. Choosing the right family photographer is such an important decision, and it all starts with asking the right questions. You want someone who not only takes beautiful photos but also understands your family’s unique dynamics and can create an experience that feels relaxed and fun. The right questions help you get to know their style, approach, and philosophy—ensuring you feel confident and excited about the session. After all, these photos will capture moments you'll cherish for a lifetime, so finding the perfect photographer is worth a little extra thought!

The first must ask question before booking your photo session is... Can I see a full gallery of past clients?

Absolutely! I’d love to share a full gallery so you can see my style and how I approach capturing families in all their beauty. Every family is unique and artful, and I love showing the entire story. Plus, I shoot on analog film, which adds a timeless, dreamy quality to the images that digital just can’t replicate. You’ll see exactly what I mean when you browse through past sessions—think color, connection, and creativity!

What is included in your session fee?

Your session fee covers the session itself, all shot on gorgeous analog film that makes every moment look like art, plus my time and expertise to edit your images. I’ll send you a private online gallery with all the final shots. Once the remainder of your package price is paid in full, you will be able to download the images directly to your computer to print and share wherever you please.

How long will it take to get our photos?

Good things take time, especially with the extra love that goes into shooting. Also, time consideration is for mailing the film to the film lab’s and developing time! You can expect to see your beautifully crafted gallery in about three weeks. I know you’ll be anxious to see those dreamy, timeless moments, and I promise it’s worth the wait!

Do I get digital files or do I have to buy prints/products?

You’ll receive high-resolution digital files that you can download and cherish forever, with the option to purchase prints directly from your gallery if you wish. I recommend getting a few—there are so many benefits to printing and displaying photos of your family; like improving self-esteem for younger children, mental health boosts for grandparents, and providing a coping mechanism for dealing with stress.

What is a session like with you?

Relaxed, fun, and yes, a little bit dreamy! Because I shoot on analog film, we take our time. There’s a natural flow that happens, and I’ll guide you so it doesn’t feel staged. I use a technique I’ve coined “pose and play.” What I do is put you in beautiful light, arrange everyone in a pose, and then give you a prompt to start genuine engagement with each other. This technique will promise the capture of genuine moments, those in-between smiles, and all the beautiful, imperfectly perfect chaos that makes your family unique. (You can read more about this HERE.)

How far in advance should I reserve my date for family photos?

To ensure you get the season and timing you want, it’s best to book 1–3 months in advance. Fall is a really busy time for family photos, so if you want a coveted Saturday spot, make sure and book 3 months or more out. But if you’re a last-minute planner, don’t worry—reach out, and if possible I’ll do my best to fit you in!

How long will the session be?

Typically, sessions last between an hour to an hour and a half. That can seem like a long time, I don’t like to don’t rush things. When sessions are rushed everyone is on edge and it is hard to get genuine interactions with each other. Also, it can take time for kids to warm up and get comfortable with me and the camera. So, we’ll go with the flow, take breaks if needed, and enjoy the process of creating timeless portraits together. It’s an experience that feels organic and unrushed, just like the final images themselves.

Do you have experience with difficult kids? (Or husbands for that matter, lol)

Oh yes, I’m well-versed in the art of wrangling both! I am a mom to three boys and have been in the throngs of motherhood for over two decades, so I’m plenty experienced. Also, through all of my clients, I’ve seen all kinds of energy (from both kids and husbands), and honestly, it’s part of what makes each session special. I’ve got tricks for getting everyone engaged and smiling—whether it’s a fun game or some goofy faces, we’ll get those natural, dreamy shots!

How many family sessions have you photographed?

I’ve photographed hundreds of families over the years, and each one has been beautifully different. The thing I love most is that every family has their own story, their own beauty. Through analog film, I capture that timeless essence, turning your family moments into art. It’s my passion, and I can’t wait to bring that out in your session!

At Alison Hatch Photo, I believe every family is a work of art, full of beauty, quirks, and love. My philosophy is simple: capture the genuine, artful moments that make your family unique. I shoot on timeless analog film because there’s nothing quite like the dreamy, nostalgic quality it gives—trust me, you’ll look back at these photos and feel like they belong in a gallery. Whether you’re chasing toddlers or corralling a reluctant spouse, I’m here to make the experience fun, relaxed, and unforgettable. Let’s create some magic together!
